Winter in Antananarivo

Winter is here and it’s a cold one this year.  While everyone in the northern hemisphere is getting out of the cold, we are getting into it.  Antananarivo is unlike the other cities in Madagascar, especially the ones on the coast.  Over there, it’s the same weather all year round.  In Antananarivo, we get cold winters and hot summers since we are high in altitude.  For example, yesterday it was about 10 degrees outside, and not much more inside since the houses are neither isolated nor heated.  We have a chimney at our house.  When we were visiting the house it was one of the reasons I wanted to move there.  But when winter came and we wanted to light the chimney the owner said that we can’t because it doesn’t work!  What a bummer!  Yesterday, I spend all evening wrapped in a blanket because I was shivering otherwise.  I have to go talk to the owner to see if he can do something about it.  I can’t imagine myself freezing like this until September!

Linda, have you read “The Afghan”?  If not, don’t bother.  I have started another book by P.D James “Death by Holy Orders”, so far it’s pretty good.  It’s a whodunit, keeps you on the edge.  What have you read so far?

Weekend

This past weekend was a long weekend.  On Sunday we played tennis with a couple of friends, then we went to the gym.  The next day we played tennis again, we had a late lunch then we wanted to go to the gym but we ended up coming back to our place and lighting a bond fire.  That was pretty cool, we toasted some marshmallows, yummy.  After that we ate again and that was the end of the night.

This coming weekend I have to work so it won’t be as entertaining but that’s ok, I work about half of the week so I can’t complain! :)

Reading update:  I’m almost done “The Afghan”, which sucks by the way, that’s why it’s taking me so long to read it.  I bought some books in Paris and there was one that I really wanted to read but now that I’m looking for it, I can’t find it and it’s really bugging me.  I looked all over the place but it’s no where.  I know that I brought it because I showed it to my husband and he remembers the book, so I’m not crazy.

Back to normal life

So my parents left, the honeymoon is over, back to reality.

It was nice to finally get back home and take a vacation from vacation!  Nothing much happened since.  The foie gras business is going well, we have a new Canadian consul, the Malagasy president did a referendum which in my opinion was rigged.

I recently read a great novel: Night Fall.  Most people probably already read that a while ago but if you haven’t, it’s a good read.  It’s the story of the TWA 800 plane that crashed off shore off Long Island July 17th, 1996.  It was said to be mechanical failure, but hundreds witnesses saw a bright light going towards the plane, thought to be a missile.  I’m sure most north Americans heard about that story in the news.  I strongly recommend the book, it’s by Nelson DeMille.

Being in Madagascar, most books available are in French.   Most book stores are quite empty and the books that they do have are old or of not much interest.  They do have a market down town where they sell books and you can even find some in English but they are all of the Danielle Steel type.  Once in a while, you can find an Agatha Christie, but that’s very rare.
